Central Avenue Dance
Central Avenue Dance 02/20/16
The Central Avenue Dance Ensemble is a multi-aged performance group led by Chester Whitmore. Its mission is to perpetuate and promote American vernacular dances of the 20th century. The group aims to show the connections between dance forms from generation to generation and their connection to music and cabaret; to show how American vernacular dances were influenced by African dance and were shaped by spirituality and slavery (liturgical dance) as well as molded by rhythm and music (tap dance and salsa). They express the infectious healing qualities of dance to educate and spread the joy of dance.

When they arrive, they find a rapidly developing set of unexpected, unlikely, and disturbing circumstances. Suddenly, eight successful professionals become scrambling lunatics running for cover, and turning on each other at a moment’s notice.

This ensemble rehearses and performs classics from the standard symphony orchestra repertoire. Emphasis is placed on stylistic and historical performance practices, playing techniques, and musicianship. Literature includes works for string and full orchestras, as well as solo and choral accompanying. Concerts are performed on and off campus.

The Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Percussion Quartet (LAPQ) has forged a distinct identity as a world-class contemporary chamber music ensemble that is dedicated to commissioning and presenting new works for percussion quartets. Members Nick Terry, Matt Cook, Justin DeHart, and Cory Hills joined together to create a classical percussion ensemble that would champion the important contributions of 20th century West Coast composers while collaborating with local artists to continue the tradition of innovation and exploration.

She has received awards in many competitions, including the Simon-Fiset Competition and the New Orleans International Piano Competition. Joined by pianist Christopher Brennan, this duo piano recital will include: Bedrich Smetana, The Moldau; Sergei Rachmaninoff, Suite No. 1 for 2 Pianos; a solo work written by ECC faculty composer Patrick Schulz and Gustav Holst, The Planets, Op. 32.

The Lo-Tech, No-Tech concerts are final showings from all El Camino College fall dance classes. Choreography is created by instructors, and students in each class perform the final dances. Technical aspects are minimalized to showcase dance genres, including ballet, modern, jazz, African, tap, ballroom, Latin social dance, hip-hop and beginning dance.

Acclaimed soprano and ECC faculty member Erin Wood with pianist Kenner Bailey celebrate the arc of a woman’s life, including the many facets of youth, love, motherhood and old age. Wood has been praised for her portrayals of Verdi and Wagner heroines featuring her “soaring soprano,” “immense voice full of grit at the bottom and transcendent radiance at the top,” and “volcanic outpouring of sound that was thrilling to behold.” This recital includes art songs, arias and theater songs, including Robert Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben, Op. 42, which translates to “A Woman’s Love and Life.”
